The Las Vegas business community works in cooperation with the state of Nevada to provide various incentives through minimal taxation, job training programs, subsidized site location services, special loan programs, and limited liability protection. This is all done to encourage industrial and business development. The city is a foreign trade zone too; this makes it a foreign business destination also.

Agriculture is not highly developed due to the dry climate and sloping terrain, instead it is devoted mainly to growing hay and other feed for cattle, however, potatoes, onions, and some other crops are also cultivated.

Nevada’s main and most profitable industry lies below the surface. Nevada is the nation’s major producer of gold, silver, copper and mercury. Petroleum, diatomite, and other minerals are also mined and extracted.

Flatbed trucking and specialized trailer transport provide crucial services for the Nevada industry sector. Mining and natural resource related industries are the key industries that rely on flatbed trailer and specialized heavy haul trailer transport.

Las Vegas has numerous other industries that rely on dry van and refrigerated /reefer trailers, one such major industry is tourism. The construction industry has a constant demand for flatbed trailers and heavy haul lowboys and removable gooseneck trailers / RGNs.

Construction projects and factories regularly use specialized heavy-duty machinery that is not-easily-replaceable and expensive. When the need arises for transporting these types of special equipment from one site to another, flatbed trucking services are the best option. This type of service is also ideal for shipping items that need to be loaded and unloaded quickly or there are no loading docks at pick-up or delivery locations.

Heavy earth moving machinery is always moved on lowboys or RGNs and construction materials are delivered on flatbed trailers or drop deck trailers.

Most of the construction and mining type of equipment is extremely heavy or oversized and should not be transported by a regular trucking service that does not have experience with heavy haul.

Flatbed trailers and drop deck trailers provide easy loading and unloading via forklift, crane or hoist, since they are open. All loads that should not get wet or need to be protected from road dust will be tarped for protection.

Flatbed Truck Shipping Process

In the world of flatbed trucking, a company must be on-time and timely. Whether you’re the shipper, carrier, or receiver of the freight, you must have good scheduling and planning capabilities.

The carrier and shipper have to coordinate with each other to ensure the truck arrives on time to be loaded and still make the delivery on time. Flatbed trucking poses its own challenges for loading, since some freight must be tarped to protect it from the weather. Every load on a flatbed truck must be strapped to secure it to the trailer deck, and if tarping is necessary that adds extra time. Oversize loads must be properly marked and placarded with signs and flags. This also increases the time required for proper loading procedures.

Once the load is on its way to the receiver, the carrier must then coordinate with the receiving department to schedule an appointment time for delivery.

Common Types of Flatbed Trailers

Standard Flatbed Trailer – This is the best option for shipping any load that goes up to a height and a width of about 102 inches. The flatbed trailer can be side loaded, which allows for easy forklift loading and unloading.

Drop Deck Trailer – This is the best option for transportation of any shipment that goes up to a height of about 120 inches. This trailer is also safer during the loading and unloading process for fork-lift operators because the freight stays closer to the ground. Loading must be done from the ground or with a crane, since the trailer bed is too low for a loading dock.

Double Drop Deck Trailer – This trailer can transport all shipments up to 144 inches high and 102 inches wide. It also allows side and top loading which facilitates the handling of different freight.

Lowboy / Removable Gooseneck RGN

A lowboy is a trailer with two drops in deck height, one right after the gooseneck and one right before the wheels. This allows the deck to be very low compared to other trailers. It offers the ability to carry legal loads up to 12 feet tall, other trailers would require over-height permits.

Specific Types Lowboy RGN Trailers:

FGN – Fixed Gooseneck. This type allows a longer deck length and has the lightest weight. These are low to the ground trailers, with low-profile tires, usually with drop ramps in the rear to facilitate loading of equipment, but are not actually considered “lowboys”. The neck is arched in such a way, that it when lowered, it becomes a ramp, thus allowing the front tires of equipment to be rolled onto the deck.

Hydraulic RGN or HRGN – Hydraulic Removable Gooseneck. This is the fastest and easiest to detach, but is heavier and has a shorter deck length. It is the most common and most versatile of lowboy trailers, the gooseneck is detached using large hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the trailer and a small cylinder shores the neck to the truck. Once the neck is removed a large piece of equipment can be driven over the front onto the deck of the trailer for transport.

Mechanical RGN or MRGN – Mechanically Removable Gooseneck. Usually lighter than the hydraulic detachable gooseneck, takes longer to load and detach. Utilized for long specialty loads.

Mechanical Folding Gooseneck – MFGN. The deck folds down to the ground to provide a ramp for trailer loading.
